The city of Penza has a rich history, since the first mention of it dates back to 1663. Therefore, it is not surprising that many temples and cathedrals were built here. Unfortunately, many of them were destroyed during the revolution, as well as during the Soviet era. But some of them have survived to this day. Some of them have already been restored. And in some, restoration work is underway.

But there are also many new temples built. And they don't stop there. Many projects are under development. Now there are churches in almost all districts of the city. Some of them are large temples. And some are small structures in the form of log cabins. But even in small churches, Sunday schools are opening, various educational centers for young people and older people.

Assumption Cathedral

It was built in 1905. Its author is engineer Alexander Starzhinsky. The cathedral was built in the pseudo-Russian style. After the revolution, the temple housed a military warehouse. However, after the Great Patriotic War, it was reopened. Nowadays, services are constantly held in the cathedral, and in 2005 the 100th anniversary of the temple was celebrated. Since 2000, the relics of St. Innocent have been kept here.

Cathedral of the Intercession

The stone temple on this site was built in 1765, but it was completed during the middle of the 19th - the beginning of the 20th centuries. In the 1930s, the cathedral was closed. A warehouse and a cinema were located here. After the war, the temple was empty for a long time. Restoration began only in the 1990s. The bell tower was rebuilt at the temple. In the late 1990s, services began to be held regularly in the cathedral. And in 2012, a prosphora was built at the temple, in which prosphora is baked for the entire diocese.

Church of Peter and Paul

The construction of the temple began in 1997 and was completed in 2014. It was cocked in the Arbekovo area. B. Churlyaev became the architect of the project. A Sunday school has been opened at the church, attended by about 120 students. There are shrines in the church: relics with particles of the great servants of the Lord, the image of all the Saints. But the main value is the holy face "Coronation of the Blessed Virgin".

Church of the Resurrection

The first temple on this site was erected in 1552 during the campaign of Ivan the Terrible. At the end of the 19th century, a new church was built here, which was then completed several times. After the revolution, a warehouse was located in this building, later a transit prison. In the late 1990s, the restoration of the temple began. At the same time, it was consecrated and the first services began to be held. In our time, the restoration work has not yet been completed.

Temple of Michael the Archangel

Built in 2000 in honor of the 55th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. The temple is located on Victory Square. This is a project by architect Viktor Gerasimov. Later, a belfry was built next to this small temple and domes were painted. The church is dedicated to Archangel Michael, who is the patron saint of the military.

Nikolsky temple in Ternovka

The first wooden church on this site was erected in 1753. And in the middle of the 19th century, a stone building was built. During the Soviet era, a village club and a cinema were located here. In the mid-1990s, the church returned here. Reconstruction work has begun and is not over yet. The temple is located in Ternovka, which is now part of the city.

Temple of Dimitri Donskoy

The temple was built and consecrated in 2012. Located in the GPZ-24 area on Antonova street. Dedicated to Dmitry Donskoy, who is the great Russian prince, commander and patron of all Russia. The temple is a log house with two domes. Now services are constantly held here.

Temple of Seraphim of Sarov

The temple was erected and consecrated in 2011. Later, a bell tower and a clergy house were built. Since that time, services have been held daily. Located in the Shuist microdistrict on K. Zetkin street. Here are the relics of Seraphim of Sarov, to whom this church is dedicated. This saint was a great ascetic and a revered monk. Sarovsky is named after the monastery, as for a long time he was its hieromonk.

Temple of Hadrian and Natalia

Located next to the residential complex "Arbekovskaya Zastava" on 65th anniversary of Victory Street. The temple was built and consecrated in 2012, but later the internal work was still completed. Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

The Nikolsky temple was built in 1994 in the Akhuny microdistrict on Konnozavodskaya street. The bell tower was built later. The author of the project is the architect Dmitry Borunov. The temple was built thanks to the help of the head of the forestry enterprise Vladimir Berezin and the parishioners. It is a five-domed structure. There are shrines in the temple. These are revered icons from different churches, as well as stones from Calvary and the Holy Sepulcher.

Church of the Matrona of Moscow

This wooden temple was built in 2013. And in 2016, particles of the relics and the coffin of Blessed Matrona were transferred here from the Intercession Monastery located in Moscow. At the same time, the house of the clergyman was built. A Sunday school has recently been opened. Blessed Matrona, to whom the temple is dedicated, helped people a lot during her lifetime. And after death, thanks to her relics, many received healing. The temple is located on Bekeshskaya street.

Savior Transfiguration Church

The Savior Transfiguration Monastery, to which the temple belongs, was built in 1689. But the temple itself was erected at the beginning of the 19th century. It was closed in the 1930s. During the Soviet era, the building was rebuilt. For a long time it housed an archive, a library storage. In the early 1990s, the temple was returned to the diocese. Work on the restoration of the temple and monastery continues to this day. And in 2018, particles of the relics of Archbishop Luke of Simferopol were transferred here.

Trinity Cathedral

The cathedral was erected at the beginning of the 20th century. It is part of the Trinity Convent, which was built at the beginning of the 18th century. The monastery was closed in 1918, and the cathedral in 1927. During the Soviet era, there were workshops, a club, a hostel, housing, vocational schools. Some of the buildings were demolished. In the early 1990s, the monastery and later the cathedral were opened. Services began to be held here. All buildings are being actively restored.

Vvedensky Temple

The temple was built at the beginning of the 20th century. This is a project by the architect Alexei Ehrenberg. In the early 1930s, the temple was closed, and a granary was located here for a long time. But in the 1990s it was returned to the diocese. In the 2000s, a bell tower was added to the temple. The temple has shrines, including stones from Lake Galilee, candles scorched by the Holy Fire.

Vladimirsky Temple

In 2013, a wooden church was built, but already in 2014, the construction of a stone building began. In 2013, a Sunday school was opened at the church, as well as a vocal, choral, photo, and sound recording studio. The temple is located in the Manchuria region on Novokazanskaya street. Temple of Peter and Fevronia

It is located in the Arbekovo district on Rachmaninov street and is located in the building of a former cinema. This temple has been operating since 1996. Initially it was the Peter and Paul Church, but in 2010 it was rededicated in the name of Peter and Fevronia.These saints during their lifetime were an example of conjugal love and fidelity, and in their mature years they were tonsured. Church of St. John of Kronstadt

At the current hospital named after N. Burdenko, the church was built back in 1822. But in 1922 it was transferred to the dissecting room. In our time, a prayer room was opened at the hospital. In 2009, the church was handed over to believers, and the first liturgy was celebrated here. And in 2015, the temple was consecrated in honor of the holy righteous John of Kronstadt.

Temple of Pimen Ugreshsky

Built in 2013. It is located in the Arbekovo district next to the regional oncological dispensary. The temple is dedicated to the Monk Pimen Ugreshsky, who in the middle of the 19th century was the abbot of the Nikolo-Ugreshsky monastery. After the construction of the temple, an ark with a particle of the relics of this saint was brought from this monastery. There is also a list from the icon of the Mother of God the Tsaritsa from Athos.

Mitrofanovskiy temple

The temple was built in 1836. But at the end of the 19th century it was rebuilt by the architect Alexei Ehrenberg. The funds for this were allocated by the merchant Epifanov. In Soviet times, it was the only active church in the city. The main shrine of the temple is the miraculous Kazan icon of the Mother of God. The church is located on Vodopyanov Street.

Resurrection Temple

Located on Sobornaya street. It is part of the Bishops' House, which was built at the end of the 18th century. After the revolution, the headquarters of the Red Army was located here. Later - the military registration and enlistment office, as well as the warehouse of the Penza garrison. In 1996, the temple was transferred to the diocese, and its restoration began. In 2015, the church was completely consecrated by the Metropolitan of Penza. Now services are constantly held in the temple.
